Fresh from the release of his latest single 'Pacific Coast' featuring Elia Esparza, Jerry Jean has some big plans for releases this year. We couldn't resist digging a little deeper:
Hey Jerry! First of all, what made you become a musical artist?
I chose this path because of a lifelong passion for music and a desire to create recordings that last over time. I love that it’s possible to create songs that can be therapeutic to both the songwriter and the listener. And it appeals to me that the songs - which are essentially little time capsules - are tangible and can be revisited throughout the years.
Tell us something about you that you think people would be surprised about?
Unlike the typical image of a musician, I don’t stay out late, hang out with many other musicians, crave to play shows, or spend lots of time on social media. I’m actually quite a minimalistic person and focus my time very simply: With family, getting sunshine outside, and working in my studio.
Tell us about your new single 'Pacific Coast'.
Pacific Coast is a classic, heartfelt duet about partnership through thick and thin. It was inspired by the relationship I have with my wife and the restorative, eternal beauty of California’s Pacific Coast, which is our favorite place. I wanted to create a song to capture that special vibe.
What was the recording process like?
The recording process was 100% remote. Joining me on vocals is Elia Esparza (The Voice, USA; La Voz, México). I was searching for a female vocal to complement my tone, and Elia's sound was an ideal match. We connected on Instagram and I sent her the track. I was thrilled when I heard her honest, soulful vocal performance back on the recording. Some of my longtime musician collaborators also recorded remotely on the song and created an organic, evergreen vibe for our voices to glide on. The string section consists of myself recording many layered takes on my violin to create an orchestral quality. Mixing was handled by the brilliant Bryan Cook (One Republic, U2).
What are your plans for the year ahead?
An acoustic solo version of Pacific Coast comes out August 12th. After that, I plan to drip release a new song every few months until I have about 12 total, which will ultimately comprise my second full-length album. I’m trying to be intentional and create songs that fit together sonically and thematically as I go along, song by song.
