North London-based emerging act Laurel Smith has been on a roll recently, making a profound mark on the industry with each new release, whilst still so young and so early on in her musical career. Her latest single, ‘Out the Cage’ follows on from Smith’s previous video release, ‘Game Over’ and is set in a similarly sinister fictional world...
Gifting fans with a welcomed dose of escapism during these dull and dreary times, ‘Out the Cage’ is a high-octane, cinematic, ‘dark-pop’ masterpiece which is a sound that is firmly in Laurel Smith’s wheelhouse. Known for creating fantastical worlds and dramatic storylines with her lyrics, Smith is often the main character in her tracks, playing the part of the protagonist she has invented.
Speaking on the inspiration behind ‘Out the Cage’, Smith explains:
“‘Out The Cage’ is a song about breaking out from your constraints, both physical and mental. Although it can be interpreted in any way, when I wrote it I created a story around a bored housewife, falling out of love with her husband, she fantasises about tying him up and leaving him to be a badass assassin in a video game type world, roaming the city at night and living a life of unpredictability and excitement” - Laurel Smith
A purveyor of the dark, electro-pop sound, ‘Out the Cage’ sees Smith expertly blend underground trap beats with smooth R&B melodies and catchy, pop-style lyrics in order to create the distinctively hazy, moody-pop vibe that she’s come to be known for. Inspired by bad-ass female artists ranging from Lana Del Ray to Ashnikko, Smiths music is intentionally provocative, drawing you into her surreal world of video games and old Hollywood glamour.
