leo. is an artist going from strength to strength, continuing to build a reputation and cement himself as an artist who’s sticking around. The Portugal and UK- based singer-songwriter has built a committed community that lose themselves in his music. His sound developed from bedroom, with ‘despair’ launching him into the spotlight in 2019. Now he looks ahead to his biggest project to date, new album ‘a new one’ set for release later this year.
leo.’s latest track is the wistfully pretty ‘irreplaceable you’, bringing us more of his magical vocal harmonies to set the scene of a melancholic atmosphere. Behind his soaring yet restrained performance lies boundless personality, telling as much of a story in his inflections and melodies as he does with his relatable well-penned lyricism. The artist uses expansive, shimmering chords that fly out from the simple, bouncy piano part that the track is rooted around. What he manages with this is creating a track that seems gentle and friendly on the surface, but is intricate and evocative on deeper listening. Upon the arrival of the drums and bass, which are both mellow in their tone, it provides an even stronger foundation for leo. to let his harmonies run wild, wrapping the listener in warmth and understanding.
leo. adds, “‘irreplaceable you’ is about accepting the idea that love can be a good thing, no matter how much you were hurt in the past. It’s the last single I’m releasing from my debut album ‘a new one’ and I feel like it really encapsulates what the album represents for me.
Much like the album is a journey through very complicated feelings, the song itself is also a journey through realising I was irreplaceable. I wrote the first half of it a couple months apart from when I finished it, and I guess I grew and learnt a lot in those couple months. The result was one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written, and Ed Allen’s production (and piano playing!) elevated it to a final version I’m so so proud of.”
