Marko Ivic’s recent single ‘Black Spring’ is a showcase of growth, an intense journey to find yourself within the environment that surrounds you. This is delivered through delicate and defiant piano performances, Marko’s ability to bring more out of the instrument than just sound is a central point in his conjuring of empathy in the listener. The notes become a lonely protagonist, grappling with evolving emotions as the music moves forward, rising to electrifying exhilaration before crashing to defeat.
The sparseness of a solo piano echoes the themes of the music, Marko sharing, “I wrote Black Spring for a theatre piece with the same name, written by Espen Hjort in 2020. The play is about the end of a love affair. After a sudden breakup, the main character goes for a walk, in order to find comfort in nature. But nature is just gone. He spends the night looking for it, but it has disappeared completely. I was motivated by Espen's parallelisms between a love story and the ecological catastrophe we are witnessing today. Black Spring tries to capture the depth of a love story amidst the destructive forces surrounding it, while still looking up for a beam of light to hold on to. Its a beautiful exemplification of our complicated love story with planet earth.”
Educated in classical piano and live electronics from prestigious academic hubs the University of Zagreb and the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Marko Ivic brings a musical passion to his compositions, and a deeper passion for the intricacies of sound itself. His work resonates with minimalist pioneers Glass, Reich and Eno, able to evoke emotion from so little, an echo of his search for discovery in subtlety. Meditative and connecting, a musician with true talent.
