Sofia Zadar is the moniker of Romanian queer musician Maria Sgarcitu, who’s expansive alternative sounds have led to great acclaim from all who listen to them. Their music unites and engages, lyrically exploring post-humanist and utopian visions through a trauma-informed lens.
On the new project, they say: “I conceived Hictopia as an exploration of the transformative possibilities of the here-and-now, whether these are emotional, somatic or collective. I believe this album to be a much-needed thread that sows utopianism to what is ancestrally within ourselves and our communities. Our ways of life in tune with earth and body are already here, underneath the layered systems that forbid our thriving. We need not search a thousand miles outside, but rather inches beneath, for the nurture and insight to birth new worlds.”
Taking you on a journey through celestial emotion, electronic aggression and impactful lyricism, world’s collide through heavily-processed elements alongside an organic affection. The music across this project is enticing for all the right reasons whilst leading you into new and experimental sounds along the way.
Gearing up for a tour of Romania’s biggest cities as the project releases, it’s clear that Zadar creates a space that is destined for developing music as we know it. Visual aesthetics and enchanting performances are inspired and intertwined with Sofia’s theatrical stage performances and art direction. One to watch for the future.
