The Youth Play have released their latest single, ‘If We Just Ever Were’, kicking into the song with a pumping drum rhythm and dynamic guitar. Gritty and punk-edged from lyrical spoken word to the cry of brutally distorted instrumentation. The drums are deeply driven, a fiery engine to power the song and keep the energy levels at a maximum. Texturally, it uses moments of pulling back to make the brick wall dynamics all the more intense when they inevitably reappear. Distinctly alternative, it forces you against the ride, the repeated phrasing thumping you into submission until you’ve felt their intentions.
The band add, “If We Just Ever Were is a song that was written alongside the tracks of the previous Wildflowers EP, the first ideas were thrown around in a moment where we felt we needed to write a fun, not so deep song that embraced the feeling of simplicity, with lyrics delving into the lack of excitement from everyday’s situations, the song aims to amplify the euphoria and catharsis that one gets from letting themselves free from socially built constructions, just focusing on enjoying the moment, as simple as it might be.
After releasing their debut EP Wildflowers, The Youth Play has been working on new material, transforming their sound and diving deeper into new themes. Constantly turning heads with a blend of alternative and shoegaze, there is certainly more to come from the group.
